Come experience the colorful Bloom Event of the rare and unique buckhorn cholla cactus, (Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa)
SECRET, BREATHTAKING AND BEAUTIFUL
“A rare cluster of beautiful flowers exists every year that most will never see. This rare patch of genetically unique buckhorn Cholla cactus, (Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa) is a multicolored variant, oddly found only in and around a small and secluded spot in Arizona, located in the Superstitions Mountain Wilderness just west of Elephant Butte which is three miles north of Queen Valley Arizona. The Sonoran desert guards this cactus flower from most eyes. The common, normally occurring Buckhorn Cholla grows wild in most of the southwest U.S. but the common varieties have only slight variability in pastel yellow blooms and supination, paling in comparison to this rare grouping of brilliant bouquets of violet, coral, bright orange, lavender, red, deep purple and pink. Like the common Arizona Buckhorn Cholla, this colorful patch of efflorescence is covered in short brownish spines, not too dense, which allow the yellow-green (in moist weather) or purple-green (during drier conditions) stems to be clearly visible. The plant branches profusely but irregularly, with crisscrossing slender stems of different lengths. In older plants the lower stems become woody. Fruits are green, later brown, and spiny.”
